Djokovic wins Australian Open in longest final

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Novak Djokovic ripped off his shirt and let out a primal scream, flexing his torso the way a prize fighter would after a desperate, last-round knockout.
This was the final act in Djokovic’s 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 victory over Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final—a sweat-drenched, sneaker-squeaking 5 hour, 53-minute endurance contest that ended at 1:37 a.m. Monday morning in Melbourne.
Djokovic overcame a break in the fifth set to win his fifth Grand Slam tournament and third in a row. None, though, quite like this. This one involved tears, sweat and, yes, even a little blood. It was the longest Grand Slam singles final in the history of pro tennis and it came against Nadal, the player who built a career on his tenacity—on outlasting opponents in matches like these.
The match was full of long rallies and amazing gets. Djokovic finished with 57 winners, along with 69 unforced errors. Nadal had 44 winners against 71 unforced errors.
Laver was part of the 15,000-strong crowd when the players walked on at 7:30 p.m. Sunday to flip the coin and start the warmup. He was still there, along with most of the crowd, after 2 a.m. for the trophy presentations.
Djokovic called it the most special of his five Grand Slam wins.
It went so long because Nadal refused to yield. He was trying to avoid becoming the first man to lose three consecutive Grand Slam finals—and seeing his losing streak in finals stretch to seven against Djokovic, who beat him for the Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles and took his No. 1 ranking last year.- http://sports.yahoo.com

Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs Rafael Nadal (ESP) ATP - Australian Open 12 BET handicap sports betting betting 1/29 4:30PM GMT+8

Defending champion Djokovic will face Nadal in a third straight Grand Slam final on Sunday. It’s a reversal from three years ago, when Nadal had to regroup after his own lengthy semifinal.
The Spaniard needed 5 hours, 14 minutes in 2009 to get past compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the longest men’s singles match in the tournament’s history. He was so exhausted, he didn’t lift a racket the following day.

Yet when the final rolled around, he beat Federer - who had an extra day to rest - in five sets that reduced the usually composed Swiss player to tears.
Now a weary Djokovic has less than 48 hours to prepare to face Nadal, one of the most fit players in the game.

Djokovic won 10 titles in 2011, six of them by beating Nadal in finals. Just as Nadal has the mental edge over Federer, Djokovic has developed a hold over the Spaniard.
But the No. 1-ranked Djokovic has shown chinks in his armor at Melbourne Park this year. Against David Ferrer in the quarterfinals, he struggled to breathe through most of a straight-sets win and at one point, clutched his leg in agony.- http://sports.yahoo.com

4 Tennis Titans Battle For 2012 Australian Open Crown

The Australian open heat gets more intense everday. Renowned tennis players from all over the world have gathered to showcase a spectacle of supreme tennis style and moves. Amidst the rally for victory, the biggest question remains, who will be crowned as 2012’s Australian Open champion? Who among Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray shall be the winner of this season?

It would not be a surprise if Djokovic steals the spotlight. Currently at the top spot of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the Serbian tennis icon is the youngest player that has played in Grand Slam events for four (4) times.

Meanwhile, despite of dropping to number 2, Spain’s tennis prodigy, Nadal proved that he is second to none. Stealing the spotlight from Berdych, tennis enthusiasts are eager to know the outcome of the Nadal-Federer rivalry.

Speaking of Federer, while occupying the 3rd spot, the so-called “greatest tennis player of all time” nailed a match against Del Potro, therefore, advancing to the semi-finals. A couple of more wins and the 16 Grand Slam record holder can be seen in the finals again.
Lastly Scotland’s pride, Murray, is no stranger in the Australian open finals. Although holding the 4th rank, he has managed to defend his Canadian Masters title in 2010.
In the meantime, at 12BET, the outright odds for the players are the following:

·         Djokovic – 2.2
·         Federer – 3.1
·         Nadal – 5.5 and
·         Murray – 6.5

Yet, the odds may still change as the Federer-Nadal rivalry strikes once again. Should Federer wins, his fans would get the lion’s shares. But if Nadal steals the crown, this would be a historic moment for Nadal supporters.

In this case, the contenders are narrowed down to Djokovic and Murray, with either Nadal or Federer to complete the top three.

Cup call for Williams sisters

Venus and Serena set to face Belarus

Venus and Serena Williams have been named in the USA team for the Fed Cup clash against Belarus in February.

US Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez has also included Christina McHale and Liezel Huber in her side for the match.

Seven-time grand slam champion Venus has not played in a competitive match since pulling out of the US Open in August last year after being diagnosed with auto-immune disease Sjogren's Syndrome.

For sister Serena, who went out of the Australian Open earlier this week following a fourth-round loss to Ekaterina Makarova, it will be her first Fed Cup appearance in almost five years.

The Belarus team are set to feature world number three Victoria Azarenka.

The match will be held February 4-5 in Worcester, Massachusetts, with the winner progressing to the World Group playoff and a chance to compete for the Fed Cup title in 2013.

Federer’s climbs to the Australian open semis after defeating Del Potro

As the courts heat up, tennis superstar, Roger Federer secures his place in the Australian Open’s semi-finals after securing his victory over Juan Martin Del Potro.
With a score of 6-4; 6-3 and 6-2, the Swiss tennis player completely dominated the game—a well-played victory for his 1000th match.
The Del Potro – Federer match was not the first for the two tennis giants. It was in the 2009 US Open where the two had a display of their tennis skills and prowess. Unfortunately for Federer, it was Del Potro who had the upper-hand. With the degree of rivalry between the two legendary players, indeed, Federer’s win is a memorable one.
A couple of more wins and Federer is up to yet another title at the Australian Open or better yet, an upcoming grand slam.
Also called as the Swiss Maestro, Federer is one of the few players that secured a career grand slam on different surfaces. He was also acknowledged as the Laureus World Sportsman of the year for four (4) consecutive years.

Roger Federer vs. Juan Martin Del Potro

Federer and del Potro have not met in Grand Slam play since the Argentine famously defeated Federer in the final of the 2009 US Open.

That victory marked the last time del Potro had a significant victory in a Grand Slam match as he suffered a wrist injury a few months later.

Although he has been back on tour for over a year now, del Potro has not been as lethal as he was prior to the injury, and his efforts against Federer will be insightful.

If del Potro can defeat Federer in a Grand Slam quarterfinal match, then the Argentine will certainly have taken a major step toward silencing his critics.

However, if Federer wins, then del Potro's run at the 2012 Australian Open will not look that impressive. Despite making the quarters, del Potro has beaten no one more talented than Philipp Kohlschreiber—a veteran player but one who has never made it to a Grand Slam quarterfinal—at Melbourne Park this year.
Del Potro and Federer have met nine times in the past, with the Swiss Maestro taking seven of those matches. They have met four times in majors with Federer going 3-1 in those efforts, including a straight-sets victory in the quarters of the 2009 Australian Open.

The only match that the two players have played since del Potro came back from his wrist injury was a best-of-three-set affair at the Cincinnati Masters in 2011.- http://bleacherreport.com

Novak Djokovic (SRB) VS Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 12BET tips Australian Open 1/22 5:45PM GMT 8

Djoko, currently ranked 1st in the ATP Rankings, is a very big favourite in this match. So far he is playing very strong at this AO and today Novak will search only for the win in three fast sets.On the other hand Hewitt is a big underdog in this match. So far he played suprisingly good tennis at this AO, however against the best player of the world he will have a very tough time to win a set.

This total games line allows Hewitt to win 11 games which I think is way above what he can hope for as this will surely end in 3 quick sets and I don't see Hewitt getting past 3 or 4 games in any of them and I'm fairly confident Djokovic will win at least 1 set with a 6-2 or better result which will give us some margin even if Hewitt manages to make one of the sets close.

Murray having a ball

British number one enjoys himself in victory over Llodra

British number one Andy Murray admitted he had really enjoyed himself as he wrapped up an entertaining straight sets victory over Michael Llodra in Melbourne on Saturday.

The British number one went through the gears in the third round match, producing some scintillating tennis as he roared away to a 6-4 6-2 6-0 triumph.

The Scot won a number of thrilling points and, judging by the reaction of the sell-out crowd, earned himself some new fans in the process.

He hugged Llodra after outwitting him in one exchange and, when interviewed on court at the end of the match, Murray said: "Every point seemed to be a fun point. It was a fun tennis match, which isn't normal at a Grand Slam.

"I had great support and it was packed from the first point to the last. I'm really enjoying myself.

"That was my style tonight. I hope everyone enjoyed it."

With the crowd appreciative of his performance, Murray even found time to joke about how he plans to spend the rest of the weekend, adding: "I'm going to go out and get hammered!" - http://www1.skysports.com/

Roddick forced out

Australian star progresses after Roddick injury

Home favourite Lleyton Hewitt is through to the third round of this year's Australian Open after Andy Roddick quit their contest.

Roddick took the first set of the battle of the former world number ones but he soon fell behind in the second following a stumble and it soon became apparent he had a problem with his leg.

At 3-0 down, the four-time Melbourne semi-finalist left the court for treatment.

When he returned, the 15th seed battled on gamely, but Hewitt's relentless chasing style is not suited to anyone carrying an injury and when the Aussie took the third set, Roddick decided it was time to call it a day.

The score was 3-6 6-3 6-4 at the time.

"It was a nightmare for both of us,'' said Hewitt.

"Obviously Andy stretched something and it's hard to concentrate for the player up the other end.

"Andy is such a great fighter so you know when he is struggling. - http://www1.skysports.com/
