NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR SPOTY
Cyclist Mark Cavendish and major winners Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy lead the nominations for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011.
Cavendish became the first British winner of the green jersey in the Tour de France after five stage victories, and was also crowned road race world champion in Denmark.
Clarke, now 43, won his first major title at the age of 42 with a brilliant performance in The Open Championship at Sandwich, the Ulsterman following in the footsteps of compatriot Rory McIlroy who had secured a record-breaking eight-shot triumph in the US Open the previous month.
Also on the 10-strong shortlist are world number one Luke Donald, world champions Mo Farah (5,000 metres) and Dai Greene (400m hurdles) and England cricketers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook.
Boxer Amir Khan and tennis star Andy Murray complete the nominees.

Nadal tired but ready for Davis Cup final
SEVILLE, Spain (AP)—Rafael Nadal is tired but still motivated to lead Spain in its attempt to win a fifth Davis Cup title against Argentina.Nadal provoked alarm in his home country last week when he said he felt “less passionate for the game” after being eliminated from the ATP World Tour Finals.Following a practice session for the Davis Cup final which begins Friday, Nadal said Monday that his words had been exaggerated.
“Things get blown out of proportion very often because conclusions are drawn far beyond the meaning of what’s said,” Nadal said. “It’s true that this season has been tough. More than a lack of passion, it is a weariness from many years of playing at this level, week after week.
“The important thing now is to work each day at 100 percent with the excitement needed to win the Davis Cup.”
The contest is a repeat of the 2008 final, when Spain won 3-2 on a hard indoor surface in Argentina despite missing Nadal because of injury.
This time Nadal will lead a Spain team on the clay surface at Olympic Stadium which includes the fifth-ranked David Ferrer and probable doubles partners Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.Argentina is seeking its first title in four attempts. Juan Martin del Potro and David Nalbandian could face Nadal and Ferrer in singles.
Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank fill out Argentina’s provisional squad with captain Tito Vazquez needing to trim his team to four players before the Dec. 1 draw.“They have great players, all of which stand out on the circuit, so the only thing we can do is concentrate on reaching the final as prepared as possible and then hope our rivals don’t have an inspired weekend,” Nadal said.- http://sports.yahoo.com

Federer beats Tsonga to win 6th ATP finals title
LONDON (AP)—Roger Federer wasn’t about to let Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pull off another improbable comeback. After a year that saw some uncharacteristic slip-ups from Federer in big matches, the Swiss star shrugged off a second-set letdown to beat Tsonga 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 for a record sixth title in the ATP World Tour Finals.“I know it’s one of my greatest accomplishments,” Federer said. “This definitely is an amazing finish again to the season. I’ve never finished so strong.”Federer was by far the most impressive player this whole week at the season-ending event for the top eight players in the world, where his three group-stage victories included his most comprehensive win ever over Rafael Nadal, beating the Spaniard 6-3, 6-0 on Tuesday.
But he looked in danger of faltering against Tsonga when he failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set and then wasted a match point in the tiebreaker. But Tsonga, who became the first player to rally from a two-set deficit to beat Federer in a Grand Slam tournament in this year’s Wimbledon quarterfinals, couldn’t pull off another surprise this time.Playing in his 100th career final, Federer broke for a 5-3 lead in the decider and served out the match to love, sealing his 70th career title with an easy volley.“I think that was the difference to other matches this year, where I lost so closely,” Federer said. “This time around I was still able to find a way through. I think that was the difference at times during the year, which didn’t maybe make this an absolutely phenomenal year.”Federer finished the season without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2002, after also wasting a two-set lead against Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinals—where the top-ranked Serb saved two match points in the fifth set.

Federer, Tsonga to play for title in ATP finale
Roger Federer of Switzerland reached his 100th career final by beating David Ferrer of Spain 7-5, 6-3 Saturday in the semifinal round of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Federer is in position to win his 70th title overall and a record sixth at the season-ending tournament for the world's top eight players.
"It's obviously a special occasion for me," said the fourth-seeded Federer, who will play sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in Sunday's final.
Tsonga beat Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-5.
The victory over Ferrer sent Federer past Andy Murray of Scotland to No. 3 in the year-end rankings, trailing No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Rafael Nadal of Spain.- http://seattletimes.nwsource.com

Novak plays for semis, Janko for Maldives
A great day for the Serbian tennis. Two of the nation’s top male tennis players, Novak Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic, take on each other for the first time ever today, 3 pm, at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Janko stands no chances of reaching the semi-finals and has already begun making holiday plans for his wife Biljana and himself, who will be joined by Novak himself and his girlfriend Jelena in Maldives. Unlike his competitively motiveless compatriot, Djokovic is still very much in contention for the semi-finals of the season-ending ATP event.
After the defeat to David Ferrer, the most Djokovic can achieve in group A is the runner-up place, and this will come only if Novak manages to beat Tipsarevic, while Ferrer wins his match against Tomas Berdych. The Spaniard has already sealed his place in the semis with two wins under his belt and can afford to lose the final match of the round-robin stage if he manages to win a set against Berdych. As for Novak, he too can still qualify even if he loses to Tipsarevic, but only if Ferrer beats his final opponent. As the season draws to a close, the cream of men’s tennis will use the opportunity to be united and lobby for a change in the ATP Tour competition calendar as of next season, as confirmed by Novak Djokovic.- http://english.blic.rs

FEDERER ROARS INTO SEMI-FINALS
A virtuoso performance from Roger Federer saw him progress to the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals after a 6-3 6-0 win over great rival Rafael Nadal.
The reigning champion controlled the first set before raising his game further in the second to breeze past Nadal in startling fashion at the O2 Arena in London.
The victory, which included an array of brilliant winners, means world number four Federer cannot fall out of the top two places in Group B.
Second seed Nadal, meanwhile, can still progress to the last four if he wins his final match of the round-robin stage against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"It's a very surprising result, I guess we can't always live up to our expectations and I've definitely seen Rafa play better, but I've also definitely played worse," Federer told Sky Sports after the match.
"I'm happy it went so well and I wish Rafa all the best for the rest of the group. For me it (the tournament) continues which is fantastic. I'm very excited about the way I played tonight."
He added: "Every day is different, it's a challenge to come out and play your best every day but today was one of those days, so I'm very pleased."
Tsonga, meanwhile, reignited his hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 win over Mardy Fish.
The battle of the two players without a point in Group B went the way of the Frenchman after one hour and 30 minutes on court at London's O2 Arena.
The sixth seed eventually came out on top in a tight opening set, one that started off with three successive breaks of serve, in a tie-break.
The second proved to be much more one-sided, though, with Fish failing to find the same form that had seen him push Nadal all the way in his opening match at the season-ending tournament.
Tsonga eased to a double break before serving out for the match, though he then promised the crowd he would perform even better in his final round-robin game, against Federer, on Thursday.
"Today was the opportunity to win here for the first time, so I'm really happy," he said afterwards.
"I just played really good tennis. Maybe I will have the chance to qualify for the semis. I will play the next round without pressure.
"I promise you, I will play better in the next round." - http://www.sportinglife.com

Andy Murray demands top form to win ATP World Tour Finals
Andy Murray feels he must hit top form immediately to stand any chance of winning the ATP World Tour Finals.Unlike all other tournaments on the tennis calendar, the year-end championship features only the world's top eight players."You have to be right on your game from the first match," said the Scot, who starts against David Ferrer on Monday."Sometimes you work your way into an event. Here you have to play your best, simple as that."World number one Novak Djokovic added: "Everybody wants to finish off the season in great style and that's what makes this even more competitive."London's O2 Arena plays host to the week-long competition for a third successive year. Two groups of four players will face off in round-robin format, before the top two from each group advance to the semi-finals and vie for a place in the 27 November final.
It starts on Sunday when Roger Federer plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at 1400 GMT and Rafael Nadal takes on Mardy Fish not before 2000 GMT.
On Monday, British number one Murray meets Ferrer at 1400 GMT and Djokovic goes up against Tomas Berdych not before 2000 GMT."It's one of the biggest tournaments on the tour - you're competing against the top guys," Murray said. "If you can win, it's a big achievement, one of the biggest. So there's a real incentive.
"This is different from other tournaments because you have to play well - very good tennis - from the first match if you're to have a chance of going through."
